Critical Thinking Essay ââ¬Å"Critical thinking is the intellectually disciplined process of actively and skillfully conceptualizing, applying, analyzing, synthesizing, and/or evaluating information gathered from, or generated by, observation, experience, reflection, reasoning, or communication, as a guide to belief and action.â⬠(Michael Scriven Richard Paul) It is based on values that go above and beyond for clarity, precision, consistency, relevance. good reasons etcâ⬠¦It examines all reasoning and purpose. Questioning leads to clearer and well thought out conclusions less consequences and allows you to view things from alternative viewpoints. Critical thinking can allow someone to process a situation, and guide you to a better decision. Critical thinking guides a persons behavior and actions towards different situations These actions vary according to the motivation behind it. Critical thinking of any kind is never the same in any person. Everyone is subject to irrational thought. Its depth, among other things, in a given situation will determine the level of thought someone will put in the situation. No one is a critical thinker at all times but only with time and self awareness one would be more likely to change there behaviors. This is a self-guided and self motivating trait. You will see it more in someone trying to live more reasonably. It allows you to think more clearly and rationally. Critical thinking can help us acquire knowledge, and improve our theories. We use critical thinking to enhance work processes and improve social interactions. By using this method you are looking at the big picture and not just focusing on what is right in front of you. ââ¬Å" Critical thinking operates on a higher level processing information, conseeding alternative points of view or reasonable objectives and arriving at a decision or making a conclusion.â⬠(Abitheira) Active, persistent and careful consideration of a belief or supposed form of knowledge in light of the grounds that support it, and the further conclusions to which it tends. The Narrators Metamorphosis in Ralph Ellisons Invisible Man Essay
The Narrator's Metamorphosis in Ralph Ellison's Invisible Man A mere glance at the title of Ralph Ellison's book, Invisible Man, stimulates questions such as, "Who is this man?" and, more importantly, "Why is this man invisible?" The anonymous narrator of Ellison's novel begins by assuring the reader that he is, in fact, a real person and is not invisible in the Hollywood sense of the term, but, rather, invisible "simply because people refuse to see" him for who he really is (3). The actions of both blacks and whites toward the anonymous narrator of the novel during his search for identity lead him to this conclusion. The narrator begins the story of his realization of his invisibility at the end of his high school days, as an intelligent and diligent student in an unidentified southern U.S. state in the early part of the 20th century. Upon giving an excellent speech about the role humility plays in progress, prominent members of the community invite him to recite the speech once again "at a gathering of the town's leading white citizens" (17). At the meeting, though, the high-ranked members of the community force the narrator and other black boys to participate in what the narrator terms a "battle royal," in which they fight each other and attempt to pull fake plastic coins from an electric rug. The narrator proceeds to win the "battle royal," and presents his speech to the wealthy men (17). Throughout the delivery of his speech, they mock and harass him, failing to see who he really is. The school's superintendent then rewards him with a scholarship to college. Because of the great reward and th e doors the reward opens up, the narrator accepts the subhuman treatment as normal. Still a weak character, he allows people to... ...s dramatically. Cyrano/Roxanne Comparison Essay
Cyrano writes letters to Roxanne telling her how much he loves her, pretending to be Christian. He loves Roxanne, but feels that he is ugly and could never get her to love him back because of his huge nose. The book and movie have the same main characters playing the same roles. Cyrano is charming, poetic, and witty with a huge nose in both the book and the movie. Women love Cyrano as a friend but nothing more. In the book, Cyrano is a famous sword fighter who fights people. In the movie, Cyrano is the fire chief who fights fire. Cyrano is Roxanneââ¬â¢s distant cousin in the book, but in the movie, they meet when they are adults and are friends. Christian works for Cyrano in both the movie and book. In the play it discusses about the strengths and weaknesses of Cyrano, it is explained that Cyrano and C. D. both have love for Roxanne and that they are both skilled characters, the weaknesses are that Cyrano doesnââ¬â¢t really tell roxane in the play that he is in love with her but in the movie Bales does tell Roxanne how he feels but not face to face. The similarities of christian and chris are that they both ask for help on what to say to Roxanne, christian in the play asks Cyrano if he could talk to Roxane for him because he is very nervous when he talks to women, in the movie it is shown that bales and chris are workers and friends, but chris runs off and vomits every time he seeââ¬â¢s Roxanne in either the bar where he runs off with sandy the bartender or Dixieââ¬â¢s diner( Raguneau bakery in the play). Christian and chrisââ¬â¢s character traits are both the same and I think the author of the play and the director of the movie did an awesome job comparing the two in a more modern day form. C. D. Bales has a spilt personality just like Cyrano does in the movie because it is detailed that they both get insulted cause of the enormous nose but they handle it well with Cyrano sword fighting against others in the play and bales humorously fighting two tennis players with a tennis racket and also in the bar with 20 jokes to a dart champion. Both of the characters put the needs of others before himself, in both the play and the movie Cyrano and c. d. help chris/christian out with what type of letter he should send to Roxane/ Roxanne because itââ¬â¢s very hard to talk to her in person.

John Locke Enlightenment - 1191 Words
The Enlightenment was a time of discovery and innovation, for political and personal philosophy. The main purpose of the enlightenment was to understand the world through different approaches this was a time where knowledge was learned and gained throughout this time especially through a philosopher called John Locke who had ideas on freedom of religion and the rights of citizens and also wrote two books in order to show his points those books are called ââ¬Å"Two Treatises of Civil Governmentâ⬠and ââ¬Å"An Essay Concerning Human Understandingâ⬠where he starts to discuss political power, state of nature, difference between state of nature, and state of war, functioning of property and the way the government should be run in the ââ¬Å"two treatises ofâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦However Locke does go back on this saying an individual can only get these things if its reasonable for them to use for their advantage and he goes further with the apple example by saying he can only take so much apple and eat so much before the rest of them go bad and he has to throw them out and he went past his natural rights by picking so much apples because there is only so much you can take and so much one can use so then Locke decides to place this rule to the land saying people can claim that land by still applying land and still pick apples but only if its reasonable and its not going to be wasted. Locke takes this a bit further by saying all the goods that people will collect will soon go to waste but if someone collects too much of one item that individual can then trade that item for a different item that someone may have too much of.
